Official: A Close Partnership
On June 24, Sony Interactive Entertainment published a post on the PlayStation Blog titled Grand Theft Auto VI plays best on PS5 — November 19. The language was direct: "Thanks to the close partnership between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5."
This is the first time either company has explicitly used the word "partnership" in public. The deal had been visible for a while — Trailer 2 was captured entirely on PS5, and Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick neither confirmed nor denied a marketing agreement when asked directly in May 2026. Now it's on the record.
The Four Features Sony Is Highlighting
The blog post outlines four specific PS5 capabilities that GTA VI will take advantage of. None are exclusive Rockstar developments — these are standard PS5 features — but confirming them for a game of this scale is notable.
The Campaign That Disappeared — Then Came Back
Shortly after the blog post went live, Sony launched a broader campaign across X, Instagram, YouTube, and Bluesky with the same "plays best on PS5" branding. Within hours, every social post was gone.
The reason: Sony's ads featured a disc-based PS5 console. GTA VI physical editions do not include a disc — the box contains a download code. Sony apparently wasn't briefed on this ahead of launch. The posts were re-uploaded later that day with a PS5 Digital Edition instead. The original PS Blog post remained live throughout.
Features, Not Performance Numbers
"Plays best on PS5" is a feature claim, not a benchmark. The blog post makes no mention of frame rates, resolution targets, or technical comparisons with Xbox Series X/S. Every advantage listed — DualSense, Tempest Audio, SSD speed — is a platform feature, not an optimization exclusive to GTA VI.
This is Sony making a hardware argument at the moment GTA VI pre-orders go live. The game will push a large number of people to buy a new console. Sony wants to make sure that when those people choose, they're thinking PS5.
One notable omission: the PS5 Pro. The blog post makes no mention of it, and all gameplay footage released to date was captured on a base PS5. Whether the Pro receives additional enhancements remains unconfirmed.
