Behavior and Threat Profile

The opossum is North America's only marsupial and one of its most effectively adapted scavengers. It eats almost anything. It survives almost everything. It is immune to most snake venom. It is not fast, it is not dangerous, and it is not going anywhere.

The "playing dead" behaviour, thanatosis, is involuntary. The opossum does not decide to play dead. It enters an involuntary catatonic state when overwhelmed by threat. It drools, it releases a foul odour, it goes completely limp. Most predators lose interest.

On Leonida's rural roads it is a persistent night hazard. Slow movement, poor road awareness, and high nocturnal activity mean rural route driving at speed will encounter opossums regularly. They do not move.

Frequently Asked

Is the opossum in GTA 6?
Yes. One sits in the headlights on a rural route at night in Trailer 1, and another forages in a suburban Vice City garden in Trailer 2.
Why doesn't the opossum run away in GTA 6?
It's slow, and its main defense is thanatosis, an involuntary catatonic state it enters when a threat closes in. Most predators lose interest and move on.

Roadside margins, woodland edges, and suburban gardens across rural and suburban Leonida. Common on rural routes at night, and a frequent roadkill hazard.
