September 2022: The Biggest Leak in Gaming History
In September 2022, a hacker obtained and published approximately 90 videos of early GTA 6 development footage. The footage showed Vice City environments, both protagonists in an early build, placeholder assets, and internal development conversations. It was the largest involuntary leak of development material in gaming history.
Rockstar confirmed the leak was authentic within days. The hacker was subsequently identified, arrested, and charged. The footage was early development material. Assets, animations, and systems visible in the leak were incomplete and not representative of the finished product.
The Intelligence That Held Up
Comparing the 2022 leak footage to the two official trailers, several elements confirmed in the leak were subsequently confirmed officially. Both protagonists appeared in the leak footage before the official trailer named or showed them. The Vice City setting was visible in the leak before Trailer 1 confirmed it. The dual protagonist co-operation mechanic was visible in early form.
The Port Gellhorn waterfront environment appeared in the leak. The Grassrivers swamp geography was present. The general urban layout of Vice City matched what Trailer 1 and Trailer 2 subsequently showed.
Where the Leak Diverged from Official Material
Character models in the leak were visibly early versions. Lucia's appearance in the leak differs from her presentation in Trailer 1. Environment detail levels in the leak were pre-optimization. Several UI elements visible in the leak did not match the HUD and interface elements shown in official footage.
The most significant divergence is in the activity and mission presentation. The leak showed early mission structure and dialogue that may or may not reflect the final game. The city geography being consistent does not mean the mission content is equally reliable.
The Credibility Rule
GTAVITIPS uses the 2022 leak as a secondary corroboration source only. An entity that appears in the leak and in official footage earns a higher confidence rating than one that appears only in the leak. An entity that appears only in the leak is labeled Reported with the leak cited as the single source.
Nothing in the database is labeled Verified or Confirmed on the basis of the leak alone.
