The Date Was Wrong

May 18, 2026 came and went. No GTA 6 Trailer 3. No pre-orders. Rockstar posted nothing. The Best Buy affiliate email that sent the community into overdrive described a campaign window that did not materialise.

An anonymous post on GTAForums, citing internal communications, stated that Best Buy "got it wrong and no pre-orders will be launching today." No supporting evidence was provided. The claim is unverified, but the outcome speaks for itself: nothing happened on May 18.

The May 18 date was Rumour. It did not materialise. Pre-orders have not opened as of this writing. The underlying leak, that pre-orders are coming soon, remains plausible but unconfirmed.
The Leak

What the Email Actually Said

The leak first surfaced around May 14, 2026. YouTuber Frogboyx1Gaming went live on stream to show an affiliate email he had received from Best Buy. The email described a promotional campaign: "GTA 6 Pre Order (Physical Game). Duration: May 18, 2026, May 21, 2026. Online Sale: 5%."

Following his post, multiple other Best Buy affiliates independently claimed to have received the same email. The Shortcut separately confirmed receiving the same message. The volume of independent confirmations gave the leak more credibility than a single-source story would normally carry.

The email did not list a price. It did not reference a trailer. It referenced a physical pre-order campaign window. The connection to Trailer 3 was community inference, not something in the email itself.

The timing made the inference reasonable. Rockstar's GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both paired pre-order openings with a major trailer reveal. A pre-order campaign starting May 18 led logically to the assumption that Trailer 3 would drop on or just before that date. That pattern held for previous games. It did not hold here.
Surrounding Signals

What Else Was Pointing at May 18

The Best Buy leak did not exist in isolation. Several other signals had the community watching May 18 closely.

Eagle-eyed fans reported that the official Rockstar Games website database went briefly offline on May 11, the kind of backend maintenance typically associated with new content being prepared. Rockstar's official YouTube channel was separately reported to have gained two unlisted videos over the weekend before May 18. Take-Two's earnings call was scheduled for May 21, and the publisher has a documented history of timing major announcements around investor events.

Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming pushed back throughout the week. Henderson, who has a strong track record on pre-order and release timeline reporting, said during a podcast that GTA 6 pre-orders were unlikely to arrive until July or August 2026. His call proved correct for May 18, at minimum.

Where Things Stand

Pre-Orders Are Still Coming

The May 18 window was wrong. That does not mean the underlying premise was wrong. GTA 6 releases November 19, 2026. Pre-orders will open before launch. The question is when.

Tom Henderson's July/August window is currently the most credible estimate from an approved source. Strauss Zelnick confirmed in his Bloomberg interview that marketing would be ramping up significantly in the months ahead. A Trailer 3 announcement paired with pre-order opening remains the expected sequence. The timing shifted. The sequence did not.

This page updates when pre-orders go live.
