The Translation

Florida Became Leonida. Miami Became Vice City.

Every GTA setting is a translation. Liberty City is New York. Los Santos is Los Angeles. Vice City is Miami, specifically the Miami-Dade metropolitan area, rendered through the specific lens that makes it a GTA city rather than a documentary recreation. Understanding where the real city ends and Vice City begins is the work of this article.

Both official trailers are dense with real-world reference points. The architecture, the street layout, the cultural environment, and the geographic relationships between the city and its surroundings all trace directly to Miami-Dade geography. This is what the trailers confirmed about the translation.

South Beach

Ocean Drive on Screen

The South Beach sequences in Trailer 1 are the most directly referenced real-world geography in either trailer. The Art Deco facades, the pastel color palette, the palm-lined promenade, and the specific Ocean Drive streetscape are reproduced with enough fidelity that real Miami Beach residents have identified specific blocks in the footage.

The Ocean View Hotel sits on this strip. In the real Miami Beach, the hotels along Ocean Drive have hosted everything from celebrity clientele to criminal enterprises since the 1920s. The building typology communicates the same thing in Leonida that it communicates in real life: money, history, and a particular kind of exposure.

Port Gellhorn

Port Everglades in All but Name

Port Gellhorn maps directly to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, the second busiest cruise port in the world and a major cargo facility for the South Florida region. Port Everglades is where the legitimate and illegitimate economies of the region meet. Container traffic, fuel distribution, and the marine commerce that makes the coastal economy function all pass through it.

The Leonida Cartel's confirmed connection to Port Gellhorn reflects the real documented history of South Florida ports as entry points for drug trafficking operations. This is not invented criminal geography. It is the actual operating environment of South Florida's criminal economy, translated to Leonida.

The Keys

The Island Chain That Makes Leonida Different

The Leonida Keys translate the Florida Keys directly. The island chain, the reef geography, the backcountry waterways, and the specific culture of the real Keys. fishing guides, dive operators, the outdoor economy. are present in Trailer 2's Keys sequences. The Florida Keys are the part of the real state that makes it unlike anywhere else. Leonida treats them the same way.

The inclusion of the Keys in the confirmed Leonida geography is the design decision that makes the map genuinely distinctive. Los Santos did not have an island chain. Liberty City did not have reef diving territory. The Keys give Leonida an entire biome that previous GTA cities did not have, and with it a set of activities, animals, and criminal logistics routes that are unique to this setting.
