The 1986 Version and the 2026 Version Are Not the Same Place

The original Vice City game was set in 1986. The world it portrayed was a specific Miami at a specific moment: cocaine economy, Art Deco revival, the Scarface and Miami Vice cultural register. Leonida is set in the present day, roughly 2026. Forty years separate the two versions of this city. They share a name, a geography, and a criminal tradition. Everything else has changed.

Understanding what carried over and what did not is the work of this article. It is also the framework for understanding why Leonida feels familiar and new simultaneously.

The 1986 Vice City game is part of the 3D Universe. GTA 6's Leonida is part of the HD Universe. They are separate canons. Tommy Vercetti's story did not happen in this timeline. The city's history is reset. What carries over is cultural and geographic reference, not in-world narrative continuity.

What Carried Over

The Constants Across Forty Years

The geography is the most stable constant. South Beach has the same Art Deco strip. Ocean Drive has the same hotel row. The waterfront geography, the Biscayne Bay equivalent, and the coastal relationship between the city and the Atlantic are all present in both versions. Miami's geography changes slowly. Vice City's reflects that.

The criminal economy is structurally persistent. In 1986, the cocaine import economy was at its peak. In 2026, the supply chain has evolved but its basic architecture, product entering through the port corridor and distributing through street networks, is the same. The Leonida Cartel is operating in the same geographic corridors that the 1986 version's criminal infrastructure used. The names and faces changed. The geography did not.

The Malibu Club and the Bahama Mamas are returning locations. Their presence as confirmed entities in the Leonida database establishes a direct continuity of Vice City nightlife geography. The addresses have survived forty in-world years.

What Changed

The 2026 Differences

The social media economy did not exist in 1986. 7X is a specifically 2026 criminal organization. The attention economy, the content-as-currency model, the livestreamed crime as a business model. None of this was possible in 1986 and all of it is native to the present-day Vice City.

The law enforcement architecture has expanded significantly. The 1986 version operated with a simpler police response structure. The confirmed Leonida law enforcement roster covers seven distinct agencies with overlapping jurisdictions. VCPD, VCSO, LHP, Leonida State Police, Vice Beach Police, Vice County SWAT, and NOOSE. That is the complexity of a contemporary American law enforcement landscape applied to Vice City.

The vehicle technology reflects forty years of automotive development. The Obey Omnis E-GT is an electric performance vehicle. The 1986 version of this city did not have electric cars. The Pfister Astron is a Porsche Taycan analog. These vehicles exist because the world they inhabit is contemporary.

The returning location names, Malibu Club, Bahama Mamas, Ammu-Nation, are not nostalgia bait. They are geographic anchors that establish the present-day Vice City as the same city its own history happened in. The player familiar with the original 1986 game recognizes the addresses. The story happening inside them is forty years newer. That gap between the familiar address and the contemporary story is where the Leonida setting does its most interesting work.
