Behavior and Habitat

The American Flamingo is the first thing Leonida shows you that is genuinely beautiful and completely indifferent to your presence. It does not hunt you. It does not charge the vehicle. It stands in the shallows of the Grassrivers, feeds, and exists in the kind of large, loud colony that turns a wetland flyover into something worth stopping for.

They move as a group. Disturb one feeding ground, get close enough in an airboat, fire a weapon nearby, and the whole colony lifts simultaneously. Hundreds of birds clearing the water at once. It is one of the most visually distinctive moments in Leonida's wildlife.

The flamingo does not pose a threat. It is not aggressive, it does not attack, and if you leave it alone it will ignore you entirely. Its value in the world is atmospheric. This is what Florida looks like. Loud, pink, chaotic in the right conditions, and somehow at home in the same state that also has alligators walking into convenience stores.
