Behavior and Threat Profile

White-tailed deer are the benchmark against which other Leonida wildlife is measured. They are everywhere in the right terrain, they are passive unless cornered, and they are the species that makes hunting in Leonida make sense as an activity.

The detection range is significant. They do not wait until you are close before running. A scent or a sound from a meaningful distance triggers the flight response. Approaching requires wind direction awareness and slow movement. Rushing the approach empties the area.

At night on roads they behave the way real deer behave: they stand in headlights and freeze. The vehicle problem and the hunt target are the same animal in different contexts.
